This is my "County Collector".
I tried an acrylic under-painting with oil on top, to be sure it dried in time to be photographed for The County Studio Tour catalog. I used hi flow acrylics which were more fun (and messier) than I had expected.
I'm participating in the Studio Tour, for the first time, this September. So, save the date: 9/19 - 9/20 And stay tuned.

This is a Eurasian Eagle Owl who lives at the LA Zoo. I believe this is one of the largest species of owl, and I just love their brilliant orange eyes.

This was painted using water soluble wax paint by @ceracolors.
I originally painted this one, because my mom used to collect foxes. She had fox hunting paintings, little fox figurines, foxes on china, and pillows, and she even had a plush fox stuffed animal in her living room that was so realistic, it scared my dog when he first saw it.
I once did a painting of a fox for her, in greyscale. She always wanted me to paint one in color, but i never got around to it while she was still here. :(
Hopefully this painting will go to someone who wants to give it to their mother, (who maybe also has a fabulous fox collection). I think my mom would like that.

6x6 Gouache on Ampersand Aquabord varnished with cold wax medium.
If you're not familiar with gouache, it's similar to watercolor, except that watercolor is very transparent, while gouache paint is opaque. It's more forgiving than watercolor, as it allows you to paint light colors over dark, which is practically impossible with watercolor. It dries very matt, which allows it to be scanned or photographed without worrying about the glare you would get from an oil painting. This is why it was used, years ago, by illustrators and graphic designers, so artwork could quickly and easily be scanned for use in magazines.
Cool tip for gouache or watercolor artists, you can use cold wax medium as a varnish when painting on hardboard. (Your mileage may vary if you're using paper. I'm not sure if the cold wax would crack, once it cures?).
To my eye, the colors may have darkened a tad. Or maybe they just got more saturated? Hard to say. But i do know, that i love not needing to frame the painting behind glass.
Also, I'm loving these floater frames by Christopher Company, LTD. (They look as great standing on a mantel as they do hanging on a wall). @christopherltd

Gandalf is possibly my favorite J.R.R. Tolkien character. I first read The Hobbit in middle school and quickly fell in love with Tolkien's Middle-earth. To this day, The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy are on my top ten books list.
Naturally, I loved Peter Jackson's screen adaptations of these books as well. This was painted from a screenshot of the movie: The Two Towers.

This was a commission for someone who liked my Lego minifigure paintings, but wanted one of his wife's favorite minifig, to give to her as a gift. Sweet.
This particular Boba Fett is from the UCS Slave 1 ship (Lego Set 75060). If you swipe left, you can see how much more detail Lego added to this minifig, compared to some others.
Also, I included a work in progress pic, so you can see my painting next to the original photograph, provided by the client.
Often, my paintings end up as a more saturated version of the original photo I paint from. They can be similar, in that way, to old photos shot with kodachrome film ... remember those? The film somehow exaggerated all the colors, (giving the middle finger to subtlety).
I LOVE old kodachrome photos. Truly love them. I'd be happy to share my last bite of dessert with them ... or if an old kodachrome photo asked me for help robbing a bank, I wouldn't say no. I'd first want to know why it needed the money. I have THAT kind of love for kodachrome.
