X-Large 36x60

A Boy and His Boston
36"x60"
Oil on Canvas
from my instagram post:
This painting, and more, are on view at my solo show at the Chester County Art Association (thru Oct 26th). @chestercountyartassociation
As has previously been established, I love dogs more than Scrooge McDuck loves money ... or more than Batman loves gadgets ... or even more than Shaggy & Scooby love Scooby Snacks ... (I could to this all day) ... so i was immediately drawn to this photo.
I also loved the Norman Rockwell-esque-ness of the image. Sentimental? Who, me? Pffft.
I decided to go big on this one ... 36" x 60". I really enjoy working large, though, I'm going to need a bigger table for varnishing. Oh ... and a bigger easel. And probably a bigger storage room to hold all my unsold paintings. 🙃 #artistproblems
Many, many thanks to @anonymousphotoproject for allowing me to use this magnificent found photo as a reference. 🙏

A Day at the Museum
36x36 oil on canvas. Black frame.
from my instagram post:
When I first saw this reference photo, it reminded me of my dad, taking me and my brothers to museums when we were little. Mom generally didn't go. (Probably for reasons of sanity.)
I remember the first time we went to the Franklin Institute. It has a giant beating heart that you can walk thru. I learned so much from that exhibit! For example, I learned that I'm terrified of giant beating hearts!
(Google it. It's ghastly.)
The giant beating heart also acts as an experiment: It can tell you whether or not you have claustrophobia. Turns out, I do. Though whether or not I already had claustrophobia, or developed it by being inside an enclosed space with the theme song from Jaws playing loudly through speakers, science will never know. (Chicken/egg.)
I just wanted to enjoy a day at a museum without having a panic attack and being forced to face my own mortality ... was that too much to ask?
At the end of the day, my dad allowed me and my two brothers to each buy one thing from the gift shop. This, in turn, allowed the Franklin Institute to buy a whole new wing of exhibits.
Many thanks to @negative_recovery_project for allowing me to use their photo as a reference! 🙏💙
Large 24x36
Before Spray Tans
24x36 oil on cradled panel
I vaguely remember having lounge chairs like this when I was a kid, and this image reminded me of sitting in the back yard, as a teenager, with high hopes of getting a beautiful bronze tan.
The only problem was, instead of inheriting the olive skin of my dad's Italian ancestors, I inherited my skin color from my mom. She was from Scotland. The land of pale blue people ... so my skin only has two settings:
(a) Silas, the albino from "The Davinci Code"
-or-
(b) Hellboy
Many thanks to @secretlifeofnell on Instagram for allowing me to use her photo as reference.

"Coney Island Cowboys"
While scouring the interwebz for early color photos, I came across this image, and HAD to paint it. The structure in the background is the Parachute ride on Coney Island. My grandfathee used to paint that thing!
Back in the late 40s to early 60s, Grandpa had a painting contracting business, and one of his clients was the Steeplechase Park, (amusement park on Coney Island, New York). After school, my dad often helped paint all the buildings and rides in the park.
And they DEFINITELY used all the latest government regulated safety equipment.
And since there WAS NO government regulated safety equipment, Grandpa saved a lot of money. Yanno ... On safety equipment. (And thank goodness, because those race horses and card games weren't going to bet on themselves).
The original reference photo was used with permission from the Ruth Orkin Photo Archive. Many thanks to @ruthorkinphoto The photo was taken on Coney Island during the making of the film “Little Fugitive” (1953) which Orkin made with her husband Morris Engel. Ms. Orkin was an inspiring woman and an award-winning photojournalist & filmmaker. She worked for all the major magazines in 1940s (impressive). According to Google, she'd be 100 years old this year. Batman (Adam West)
8x8 oil on panel. black floater frame
Who was the best Batman?
...
...
...
Trick question. It's Adam West.
Fight me.
Joker (Cesar Romero)
8x8 oil on panel. black floater frame
Cesar Romero wasn't my FAVORITE Joker ... I mean, the guy couldn't even get rid of his mustache for the part? Cheesus. I mean, Christian Bale ate one can of tuna and an apple a day to lose 63 pounds for his role in The Machinist, you'd think the least Cesar could do is shave his 'stache. Didn't anyone tell him, it'll grow back? Sheesh.
The best Joker is probably Heath Ledger, but if you said it's Joaquin Phoenix, I wouldn't fight you.
On the other hand! If you say it's Jared Leto, we can never be friends.
Penguin (Burgess Meredith)
8x8 oil on panel. black floater frame
I'd probably be a supervillain too if my parents had named me Oswald Cobblepot. Aaaand the winner of The Best Quacking Cackle goes to: Burgess Meredith, the original "Aristocrat of crookery".

From the tv show "Bewitched" (1964 to 1972)
Massive plot flaw: While I can suspend my disbelief that witches are real and that sometimes their husbands are replaced by completely different actors, it's impossible to believe a man married to a witch asked her NOT to perform magic. I mean ... come on!
Side note: Paul Lynde was hilarious as Uncle Arthur. He was also my favorite celebrity on "Hollywood Squares". Thanks for the laughs, and RIP Mr. Lynde.

Not to take anything away from Zachary Quinto, but Leonard Nimoy will always be my favorite Spock.
In addition to Star Trek, we also watched his TV show "In search of ..." as kids. The Sasquatch episode in particular, terrified my little brother. He wouldn't sleep alone in his own room after watching it. He had to bunk with our older brother. Hahahahaaaa!
Oh, and did you know Mr. Nimoy was also a photographer? Check out his "Full Body Project" (photos of women from the burlesque group the 'Fat Bottom Revue"). They are stunning. Could I possibly be a bigger fan of the man? I think not.
RIP Mr. Nimoy
Santa's Street Clothes
10x8 oil on cradled panel, Gold floater frame
I loved Santa in his street clothes in the Rankin Bass special “The Year Without a Santa Claus”. He looks very put together. I’d swipe right. My look and fashion choices, on the other hand, could be described as "not really trying".
Who knew Santa was such a metrosexual? I bet he uses cologne, moisturizers, and oils, and gets mad when his favorite beard product is out of stock.

Elf, What's Your Favorite Color
8x10 oil on cradled panel, black floater frame
Will Ferrell is hilarious in the movie Elf. He’s the kind of overly-enthusiastic co-worker who actually enjoys team building exercises at work retreats, but also, that one friend who drinks way too much redbull and is always up for some shenanigans. And I like that about him.
I especially loved the parts in “Elf", where they paid tribute to the original stop motion Christmas specials by Rankin & Bass, “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer”. The entire movie is genius.

Leg Lamp, A Christmas Story
Sold out
10x8 Oil on cradled panel, Black floater frame
This lamp was from a scene in “A Christmas Story”, which was based on the book by Jean Shepherd, titled: “In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash” which is possibly the best book title in the history of book titles.
The film is played on a loop that starts on Christmas Eve and has been the background noise to pretty much every Christmas gathering at our house, since they first started these “24 Hours of A Christmas Story” TV marathons in the late 90s.
If you haven’t seen it yet … why do you hate laughing so much?

LEGO Mandalorian
Sold out
6x6 Oil on panel, black floater frame.
This OEM LEGO minifigure is The Mandalorian (from the new TV series of the same name). Here again, I don’t own this particular minifigure, but because Star Wars fans are awesome, a guy on reddit sent me a photo of his minifigure for me to paint. What? I can’t buy EVERY LEGO minifigure there is, or I wouldn’t have any money left over to buy art supplies.
About my LEGO Star Wars Series
You can't grow up, a child of the 70s and not be a fan of Star Wars. Or, at least, I couldn’t. Growing up as the only daughter, sandwiched between two brothers who had all the Kenner Star Wars action figures, an X-wing fighter, a landspeeder AND a death star, I pretty much had no other choice but to love all things Star Wars. Forget Malibu Barbie, and her stupid dream house, I wanted to play with Luke Skywalker and his lightsaber. Also, Luke could move things … WITH HIS MIND! Half my childhood was spent holding my right hand out in front of me, straining with effort to try to lift things using only “The Force”.
Is it any wonder I'm drawn to paint Star Wars LEGO minifigures? Star Wars minifigures are to me, what sunflowers were to Van Gogh, or waterlilies were to Monet. You can’t not paint what you love, no? (I bet Van Gogh only painted sunflowers because his brother, Theo, never bought him any Star Wars LEGO sets. Also, Star Wars LEGOs were probably ridiculously expensive in 19th century France.)
About my LEGO Minifigure Series
Building large scale LEGO sets seems to be extremely popular, during quarantine. I guess putting together complicated LEGOs is a great way to take your mind off a global pandemic. Oh, and murder hornets. And a contentious election with a divided country. And … pass me the red LEGO brick, please. :-/
Sometimes, LEGO’s are simply an escape when the sky is falling. And so is art.

This LEGO minifigure is of the character known as The Child from the new TV series, "The Mandalorian". LEGO Hulk
You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry? You mean, "who wouldn’t like me when I’m angry!" I’m adorable when I’m angry! Just ask my husband.
(Pardon me for just a moment, I need to give my husband "The Look”.)
I used to love the 1970s TV show, "The Incredible Hulk", starring Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno. (Bill Bixby was also great in "My Favorite Martian", and "The Courtship of Eddie’s Father").
So, do you prefer Bill Bixby or Mark Ruffalo as Dr. David Banner? And if you say Edward Norton, I'm breaking up with you right now.

LEGO Minifigure Helmet - Darth Vader
6x6 Encaustic on panel, black floater frame.
Darth Vader has to be one of the top five greatest villains of all time. His Nazi-shaped helmet, alien bug-like eyes, and his mechanical breathing, made him super scary. And who can forget that shocking twist in "The Empire Strikes Back", when Luke learns the answer to the question: “Who’s your daddy?” And do you remember where you were the first time it dawned on you that Leia had kissed her brother on the lips? What kind of sick family kisses on the lips? (Frankly, we all know a family like that, and we secretly judge them).
About my Star Wars LEGO Helmet Series
I feel like if health professionals would add an addendum to the mask mandate with the words "or a helmet", more people would comply. For these helmets of different LEGO minifigures, I was trying for low key paintings. In art, this means a limited value range, biased towards mid-tones and darks. As these are the "bad guys" in the Star Wars universe, I thought a murky atmosphere would work well.
For a challenge, I might try these again someday, as hi key paintings. It might be fun to see how i can attack this subject matter with that intention, especially for Darth Vader's all black helmet. Stay tuned.

LEGO Minifigure Helmet - Stormtrooper
6x6 Encaustic on panel, black floater frame.
This is a painting of a stormtrooper helmet from a LEGO minifigure. The white stylized skull is truly an iconic design. The only thing keeping stormtroopers from being truly terrifying, is their horrendous aim. They couldn't hit a womp rat if it was standing right next to them.

Morticia Addams
20x11 oil on cradled coffin-shaped panel.
From original Instagram post:
These coffin shaped panels from @trekell_art_supplies are fun! And what a great way to kick off my first ever, annual Halloween themed series of paintings, with none other than the OG Morticia Addams herself, Carolyn Jones.
I asked my husband to start calling me "cara mia", but he thought I said Karmann Ghia.
Should I be mad that he didn't even ASK WHY I wanted him to start calling me Karmann Ghia?
Or! Should I be mad that he AGREED to call me a German car, because it means he was afraid to start an argument with a crazy person, who wants to be known as an odd car name?
I mean, sure ... it'd be weird if I said, from now on, I"d like to be known as Mercedes, but not nearly as weird as asking to be called Karmann Ghia, right?
I can't believe my husband thinks I'm a crazy person who wants to be called a German sports car from the 1960s!
He's in big trouble now.
